Dooner Threads was created in the small residential mountain town of Bonny Doon. Nestled in the Redwoods, constantly fascinated by the flocks of quails, taking in the wonders of Bonny Doon Beach, and always being inspired by the abundance of biodiversity in motion-The sole focus of our handcrafted screen printed apparel line is to share the Santa Cruz mountain voice of that naturalistic state of mind.
The very first step in the process of this local apparel line is to draw the image of inspiration with a pencil and paper. The second step is to edit the image in illustrator making all lines crisp and completely opaque. Third step is to print out that fine-tuned inspired image onto a transparency. Fourth step is to expose the screen with photo emulsion in a dark room which in turn burns the positive part of the image onto the silk screen itself. In this step a piece of plexiglass is laid atop the transparency so that the transparency sheet remains flat & is weighted down firmly to the screen. Fifth step is pressure wash the exposed image clean, ridding the exposed screen of all excess photo emulsion. After the screen is dried in the final seventh step the screen is pressed with the desired water based paint onto a piece of vertically integrated apparel.
Dooner Threads silk screening process runs off a single board loader two color press, aluminum framed silk screens, water based paint, and a rain water harvested dunk. We’ve cultivated local artists to create imagery based upon the natural world of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The art you see on our apparel is a pure celebration of our unique mountain life.
